Have you been watching The Voice on NBC? It’s a talent show for singers where music-industry greats choose the next big star … only there is one catch: they can’t see what the person looks like. The person can be a teenager or a grandmother; fat or thin; beautiful or not-so-beautiful.
Now I understand that as the producers learn about these contestants, they’re trying to piece together a story. But what I am finding so fascinating watching this competition is the number of contestants who are attached to their identities as the striver, the misfit, the gay person, or the person who “almost” makes it, but never quite gets there.
One of the singers was actually introduced as “‘Mr. Almost’ Himself” because all he talked about was how he almost gets a big break!
Not surprisingly, these people are not the people who win the round and move the next round of competition. (You guessed it … Mr. Almost “almost” made it to round 3. Almost.)
The reason they don’t move forward is they’ve created an identity around their perceived struggle. Subconsciously, what their ego really wants is simply to perpetuate their identity. It wouldn’t know what to do if they actually won.
They give off an energy of trying but never having so that’s what they attract.
Others talk about how they don’t fit in. I can feel their Striving and Wanting energy. (I want to scream out to them: musicians are WEIRD! Look around! If you’re like everyone else, no one is going to sign you to a record deal. This is your greatest ASSET.)
Your Ego Identity can really give you fits. It’s the thing that makes you binge on two pieces of cake just when you start to lose significant weight. It’s the thing that keeps you at a job you dread year after year when you want to go live your dream.
See, your Ego Identity thinks it’s YOU — but is actually terrified of you changing and getting where you really want to go. It wonders, “But what will happen to ME?”
When you do release it, you will be liberated from everything that’s holding you back! (I just had this happen with two private clients this week … the lightness, the opportunities, the ease of life … it’s really amazing to see things open up inside and outside.)
In order to break out of your patterns that don’t serve you, you’ll need to discover your ego identities and decide which ones are no longer serving you and let them go.
And then you get to choose something new.
How about the person for whom everything works out easily … who has things fall in his lap like magic … who attracts loving, generous people and ample opportunities?
Doesn’t that sound a whole lot better?
The crucial step of releasing the Ego Identity is why the fourth Phase in the S.O.U.R.C.E. Blueprint is Release. I guide you through this all-important shift so you can break to a out of your patterns and choose something new: something that actually serves you and your dreams. It’s an amazing experience to be FREE.
